IEA Wind Task 41: Enabling Wind to Contribute to a Distributed Energy Future (Working period 2019 - 2023)

IEA Wind Task 41 aims to create framework conditions for decentralised small and medium-sized wind turbines in order to establish them as a competitive and reliable technology for decentralised energy generation. A strategic focus in the pursuit of this goal is the revision of the IEC standard for wind turbines, taking into account the latest research results.

IEA Wind Task 54: Wind Energy in Cold Climates (Working period 2022 - 2024)

In order to achieve the expansion targets for renewable energies, generation plants will increasingly have to be erected under more demanding technical and environmental conditions in the future. For wind energy, this means planning and operating turbines under icing conditions in many countries. The task investigates and evaluates technological solutions in this environment and publishes procedural recommendations in the form of technical reports and guidelines.

IEA-4E Annex Electric Motor Systems (EMSA). (Working period 2014-2017)

The goal of the Annex Electric Motor Systems is to raise awareness on the large savings potential in motor systems, while showing the realization method of such a path. Currently, Austria leads the task Energy Audits for Motor Systems to develop recommendations for carrying out energy audits for motor systems based on international standards.

IEA-Bioenergy Task 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2016 - 2018)

The task deals with the analysis and dissemination of relevant information concerning biorefineries. In the last period the focus was on the development of an open-access tool for the TEE-evaluation (Technical/Economic/Environmental Assessment) of biorefineries.

IEA-DHC Annex TS2: Implementation of Low Temperature District Heating Systems

The potential of alternative heat sources is highest at low system temperatures, but current district heating networks are usually high-temperature systems. The aim of the IEA DHC Annex TS2 is to support the transformation of district heating networks towards lower temperatures (the so-called 4th generation). For this purpose, Annex TS2 forms an international platform that enables an exchange on the topics of technology, system, demonstration and competitiveness.

IEA-IETS Annex 15: Industrial Excess Heat Recover (Phase 2)

In the framework of IEA IETS Annex 15 potentials of excess heat and technologies for their integration were collected from national research projects, bundled and elaborated on. This way, a broad knowledge base was built on experience gained in carrying out surveys for potential use of excess heat. Experiences with questionnaires, process integration tools and extrapolation of data using existing knowledge about the respective energy systems were exchanged. A process database with detailed process information could also be established, which can be used for further research activities. Also, in the area of policy instruments, recommendations for future measures to increase the use of surplus heat were derived on the basis of national contributions.

IEA-IETS Task 19: Electrification of Industry

The electrification of industry can make a major contribution to CO2 reduction. The aim of the task was a transfer of knowledge between the international and the state levels. Nationally, the aim was to spread and establish the topic of “electrification of industry” through stakeholder involvement. A comparison of electrification based on roadmaps and resources was carried out and, above all, systemic aspects of electrification of industry were analysed.

IEA-ISGAN Annex 1: Global Smart Grid Inventory IEA-ISGAN and Annex 2: Smart Grid Case Studies

The international Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) aims to improve the understanding of Smart-Grid-technologies and to accelerate global deployment. The work in ISGAN is structured in eight standing working groups (annexes). The present project describes the Austrian contribution to Annex 1: Smart Grids Inventory and Annex 2: Smart Grids Case Studies.

Internationale Energieagentur (IEA)

IEA-ISGAN Annex 2: Smart Grid Case Studies (Working period 2019 - 2023)

The main objective of this working group of the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) is to provide all relevant stakeholders with access to detailed information on the current status of smart grid pilot and demonstration projects.

Internationale Energieagentur (IEA)

IEA-ISGAN Working Group 5: Smart Grids International Research Facility Network (SIRFN) (Working period 2021 - 2024)

As a global network, SIRFN works to improve the understanding of smart grid technologies and to promote their development and dissemination worldwide. Austria's participation during the project period ensured the networking and visibility of the Austrian smart grid research infrastructure at a global level and provided important access to a worldwide network of leading institutions and laboratories.

IEA-PVPS Task 13: Performance and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems (working period 2010-2018)

The Task 13 provides a common independent platform whereby quality aspects of PV systems and its components are elaborated and exchanged amongst the stakeholders, and disseminates this knowledge to different market actors.

Internationale Energieagentur (IEA)

IEA-PVPS Task 13: Performance, Operation and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems (Working period 2018 - 2021)

The IEA Task 13 develops independent, internationally valid analyses and recommendations for the operation and reliability of PV systems and their components. The continuation of the Austrian participation ensures the flow of information back to the Austrian photovoltaic industry through international cooperation and strengthens Austria as a location for innovation and production.

IMUVar - GRAVIS - Terrestrial Moving-Base Gravimetry Using a GNSS/SINS Platform

The GNSS/SINS combination may be adapted for terrestrial use where the platform will be mounted on a car. The gravity measurement by a moving car is a possible alternative to airborne and terrestrial gravimetry. This method can especially be applied for the densification of gravity measurements in complicated regions with sparse gravity distribution. Within the project GRAVIS a demonstrator for determining the Earths gravity field by using a car will be built.
