As an indispensable basis for added value and employment, the Austrian industry has to keep finding new answers to the challenges of a globalised economy. International competition, shortage of resources, environmental standards, energy efficiency, the development of the labour market, flexibility and quality of the manufacturing processes require production research to deal with specific questions along the entire value chain.
The way we manufacture goods today will fundamentally change. In the years to come, we will experience a far-reaching and complex structural change in the industry. Due to the anticipated changes, these developments are called "Industry 4.0" or "Advanced Manufacturing".
The FTI initiative "Production of the Future" promotes issues and questions of production research specifically at the interface between economy and science in Austria. Pilotfabrik 4.0 is a best practice of the Austrian government's Open Innovation Strategy, with the objective of making Austria the leading location for research and development by 2030.
