Mind the gap - Development of a Directional Drilling Method for Shallow Geothermal Energy

The project develops a miniaturised directional drilling method enabling geothermal boreholes to be installed beneath existing buildings, addressing a major gap in densely built urban areas. By drilling from accessible edge zones and keeping all probes on private land, permitting procedures are simplified and public-space interventions minimized. The study assesses technical, regulatory and economic feasibility and forms the basis for subsequent prototype development.

Mission2030 – Climate-neutral Smart City Klagenfurt 2030

As Austria's only city, Klagenfurt is part of the EU Cities Mission 2030. Along with Rome, Barcelona, Laibach and other European cities, the Carinthian state capital has set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2030. A project that is not utopia, but quite realistic! An essential component and backbone of this mission is the Austrian Pioneer Cities Program.

ModularHeatNet

The aim of the project is to support Ottensheim in phasing out fossil fuels and developing a "climate-neutral" heat supply. As a result, the community will receive a solid decision-making basis based on the technical, economic, organizational, and environmental comparison of the examined heat supply approaches.

MokiG: Monitoring for climate-neutral buildings

The aim is to develop and implement an innovative monitoring concept to demonstrate the achievement of climate neutrality in buildings. A central element here is the integration and linking of various data sources. The basis for this is a data mesh structure, artificial intelligence and the creation of digital twins. Finally, the methodology will be tested on real buildings and discussed with users.

Multi-WP – High-efficiency multivalent heat pump concepts for the thermal use of external air with geothermal storage

Optimization of multi-WP systems consisting of air-source heat pumps and geothermal storage with regard to increasing flexibility and efficiency from 30 kW for individual buildings as well as neighbourhood solutions and addressing aspects such as PV utilization optimization, mode of operation, utilization conflicts and noise pollution from air-source heat pumps. The project will establish the use of the heat source external air in combination with seasonal storage as a particularly efficient alternative for heating, cooling and hot water supply.

NEXUS - AI for Next Generation Smart Buildings

he NEXUS project develops a novel AI-based framework for scalable fault detection and predictive maintenance of HVAC systems in buildings. NEXUS enables early fault detection without the need for large labeled datasets. The project aims to significantly reduce energy consumption, extend system lifetimes, and contribute to the decarbonization of the building sector.

NNATT - Sustainable use of excavated materials from civil engineering and tunnelling using sensor-based technologies

The holistic system developed in the NNATT project for the sustainable utilisation of excavated materials starts with the geology and extends through the construction process to recycling. With the help of sensor-based real-time analyses and an AI-supported decision matrix, excavated materials are separated and further developed into customised products.

NUCLEUS - Sustainable Urban Clusters for Climate-Neutral, Efficient, and Eco-Friendly Urban Development

The exploratory project NUCLEUS examines how Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) can serve as catalysts for positive urban developments. The climate pioneer district Tagger Areal in Graz serves as a case study. The project aims to identify technical and regulatory challenges and develop future-proof energy concepts to enable the exchange of electricity, heat, and cooling with surrounding industrial enterprises.

NaKaReMa - Improving the sustainability of cable sheathing through regional, bio-based and recycled materials

The NaKaReMa project takes a holistic approach to cable sheathing for automotive applications and their improvement in terms of sustainability. To this end, various approaches are being investigated - both regional raw material sources to reduce transport routes and bio-based raw materials to reduce dependence on crude oil. The use of recyclates from cable sheathing to close the cycle through recycling is also being investigated.

NatMatSave30! – substitution of naturally mined raw materials to achieve material-footprint goals in 2030!

Blast furnace slag (BFS) is a waste product in a steel manufacturing process and is available regularly and in huge amounts. It should substitute naturally mined, mineral raw materials. This means also calcium carbonates, which are used in building industry and are responsible for ca. 50 % of the domestic material consumption of 167 Mio tons. By wet-milling BFS it’s oxides should be able to form calcium carbonate again by recarbonatisation with CO2 from the surrounding atmosphere.

NeoEAI4Control - Neuro-Symbolic Edge AI for Efficient and Robust Control in Energy Management

Increasing energy efficiency in buildings is a key goal of the energy transition, which, together with increasing digitalization, is leading to new requirements for intelligent control and regulation. Traditional control methods are reaching their limits. As part of the project, we propose the use of edge AI with specialized neuromorphic chips to enable scalable, decentralized, efficient, and real-time control in buildings.

New solvents and processes for post-combustion CO2 capture

New and better solvents for CO2 absorption can reduce the costs of Carbon Capture and Storage significantly. Therefore, the ability to absorb CO2 and the vapour - liquid equilibrium curve of different new solvents will be determined in the laboratory and under real operating conditions at a power plant. Furthermore, the achievable CO2 removal efficiency of spray towers will also be investigated for different solvents.

OPEN HEAT GRID - Open Heat Grids in urban hybrid systems

The primary research topic of OPEN HEAT GRID was to investigate the possibilities of enforcing the feed-in of industrial waste heat into existing district heating networks. The project results show that excess heat is not for free: despite minimal variable costs, the investment costs need to satisfy usual payback periods. The analysis shows that there is no need for a regulation in the sense of a feed-in obligation or market liberalization. However, from an economic point of view, information asymmetries exist, which may lead to irrational decisions.

OPENing Re-Use – Optimal planning decisions in the re-use sector

In an operational context, companies in the circular economy are faced daily with the question of whether a used product should be repaired, remanufactured, refurbished or recycled. The decision on what to do with used products is fraught with a great deal of uncertainty and must be made on a case-by-case basis - product-individually and depending on factors such as brand, condition, age, demand or recycling possibilities. As part of the "OPENing Re-Use" project, a business planning tool is being developed to support companies in their re-use planning, thereby increasing the efficiency of re-use processes and making re-use activities even more competitive with the purchase of new products.
