BuildReUse ‐ 100 percent re‐use and recycling in buildings with short usage cycles

Some buildings, such as supermarkets or office buildings, are often demolished and rebuilt after a few years or at least have their interiors changed, turning large quantities of building components into waste. The BuildReUse project aims to develop circular economy concepts for these buildings and to promote the necessary change in the construction industry.

Building and modernising with "Building of Tomorrow"

The project BauModern turned to non-profit and commercial housing developers and real estate managements. In close co-operation with the federations of the housing and real estate economy has been achieved that builders are informed about market-suited innovative technologies and concepts and use these strengthened for their projects both in the new building and in the refurbishment.

Building as living lab - Buildings as a living lab for climate-neutral, needs-based and affordable housing

Within ÖWG, climate protection and sustainability are strategically anchored in renovation and densification projects. A comprehensive, climate-neutral renovation concept had been developed for a specific pilot property in Graz in an open, co-creative innovation process. The building becomes a living lab in which new solutions are tested in the everyday lives of the residents.

Buildings of highest energy-efficiency with integrated renewable energy development

For the future supply of energy services the combination of energy efficiency, energy storage and decentralized use of renewable energy in buildings offers itself. The project identified dynamic potentials of possible active and passive energy yields of construction units with use of renewable energy sources, pointed future solutions to energy-efficient and ecological design of building construction-units and united all results to a signpost: From today's passive house to the energy-plus-house of the future.

Business model innovations for rental and service models in the manufacturing sector

The project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the economic and ecological potentials of an implementation of lending and service models in the manufacturing sector in Austria and to show which changes and R&D efforts are necessary so that these can be realized by suitable business models.

CE4ALL – Circular economy for all – Incentives, enablers and inhibitors for sustainable consumption

Based on an analysis of current milieu-specific consumption behavior, the CE4ALL project aims to identify sector-specific incentives and enablers for strengthening the circular economy and to uncover inhibitors. Another focus of this work is the consideration of inclusion aspects. CE4ALL is working on a consumption-centered investigation beyond the previously production-oriented considerations of the circular economy.

CITYGovernance - Adjustments in the innovation ecosystem around regulatory framework conditions

The aim of the R&D service was to gain insights on obstacles and barriers to the overarching governance for achieving the goal of "climate neutrality of Austrian cities", to structure them and to prepare them in a publishable study. The study focuses on the areas of energy, buildings and mobility and contain recommendations for action on the necessary framework conditions and need for change.

CO-MOD - Increasing comfort and energy efficiency through improved lighting and air quality in schools - implementation through modular EPC-models and ESCO-networks

In general local educational institutions such as schools and kindergardens have a high average demand for improved comfort and energy efficiency improvements. CO-MOD develops a flexible, modular concept (with provider networks, various financing options incl. "Grandmother"-Energy Services, contract modules) that can also respond to the individual circumstances of smaller objects.

CO2 neuBau - The CO2-neutral Construction Site: a Contribution to the Climate Protection by the Austrian Construction Industry

Identification of all direct and indirect CO2, respectively, GHG emissions generated at construction sites. Analysis of the framework conditions and technologies towards demonstrating the options for their control. In parallel, added values, such as cost-benefit advantages of a CO2-neutral construction site, were outlined and quantified.

CO2-Demobau - Exploration of the feasibility of carbon-neutral model construction sites

By highlighting green innovations, networking with stakeholders in the construction industry and applying the findings of the previous study "CO2 neutrale Baustelle", the foundation is set for future carbon-neutral model construction sites. These construction sites will serve as best-practice examples in the fields of contracting, construction operations organization and technology.

COP5+ - Further development of a heat- and cooling system with seasonal heat storage at the example of Central Europe´s biggest geothermal depth drilling field

The aim was to increase the overall energy efficiency of Plus-Energy-Houses by making the heat excess of summer available for use in winter. This was carried out by improvements of the technology seasonal heat storage to an intelligent overall system. The biggest geothermal depth drilling field in Central Europe has been established.

Can sustainable building be realized at reasonable costs?

At the development "residential Passive House Utendorfgasse" were reached very low building costs. Would there be different building costs by using ecological materials and technologies? There will be calculated additional and reduced costs by using the ecological building-catalogue and internal characteristic values of projects that are similar in design.

Carbon Accounting Pioneer Cities - carbon accounting and climate neutral cities

With the mission climate neutral cities the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI, previously: BMK) has set a focus that will accelerate the achievement of climate and energy goals through research, technology and innovation. As part of this mission, the Environment Agency Austria will accompany and support the pioneer cities in creating a harmonized GHG balance sheet for cities. The harmonized GHG accounting forms the basis for the targeted alignment of strategies and measures to achieve climate neutrality in cities and communities.

Circular Economy Compass (KLW-Komp)

The Circular Economy Compass project has developed a responsive online self-assessment tool for the circular economy in SMEs. Based on a theory-based evaluation scheme, it is be possible to determine a company's degree of preparedness for a circular economy at a reasonable cost. To this end, the tool has a computational logic that automatically generates a circularity score (KPI, Key Performance Indicator) based on the answers.
